The company score scale is the range and the labels used for the Overall performance question, the Overall potential question, competency ratings and the final performance score of every new review. You can pick any range from 1–2 up to 1–10 and rename each value, for example "1 – Needs improvement" to "5 – Outstanding". Customers also call this the rating scale or performance levels.
Before you start
- You need Reviews > Review Process Full Visibility. People with it see Reviews in Settings > People.
- The scale applies to new reviews. Reviews that are already Scheduled, Active or Finished keep the scale they started with.
Step by step
- Go to Settings.
- In the People section, click Reviews ("Customize your evaluation scoring range").
- In Scoring, open Select scoring scale and pick a range, for example 1 to 5 (recommended).
- Under Labels, rename any value. Each label must have text ("Label can't be empty").
- Click Save. The message "Score range updated successfully" appears.

Default labels for the 1 to 5 scale
| Value | Default label |
|---|---|
| 1 | Needs improvement |
| 2 | Room for growth |
| 3 | Meets expectations |
| 4 | Exceeds expectations |
| 5 | Outstanding |
Rules and behavior
- If you change the scale or a label, then only reviews launched or scheduled after the change use it. Past and active reviews remain unchanged.
- If a review is scheduled, then it keeps the scale that was active when it was scheduled. If you remove the schedule, the review goes back to using the company's current scale.
- If a review is still a Draft, then it shows the company's current scale until it launches.
- If you compare reviews with different scales, then Factorial converts each score to a 0–100 value for analytics. For example, 4 on a 1–5 scale is 75, and 8 on a 1–10 scale is 77.8.
- The scale controls the Overall performance, Overall potential and competency questions. Other rating questions use the review's own Scoring range in the Questionnaire.
Limitations
- You can't have different company scales for different teams or legal entities. There is one scale per company.
- You can't start a scale at 0 or skip values. Scales always go from 1 to N.
- You can't change the scale of a review that has already launched.
- You can't use more than 10 values.
Troubleshooting
- Symptom: "I changed the labels but the active review still shows the old ones." → Cause: active reviews keep the scale they started with. → Fix: the new labels apply from the next review.
- Symptom: "I don't see Reviews in Settings > People." → Cause: you don't have Review Process Full Visibility, or the company doesn't have the Performance module. → Fix: ask an admin.
- Symptom: "The questionnaire's Scoring range shows different labels." → Cause: the Scoring range of a review is a separate setting for regular rating questions. → Fix: edit it in the draft review's Questionnaire > Scoring range.
FAQ
1. Which scale do you recommend?
1 to 5 is marked as recommended in the product.
2. Can I use a 1–4 scale to avoid a middle value?
Yes. Pick 1 to 4.
3. Will Talent Analytics still compare old and new reviews?
Yes. Scores are compared on a 0–100 basis, so reviews with different scales can be compared.
4. Do the 9-box grid labels change with my scale?
No. The 9-box grid places people in low, medium or high bands and uses its own box names (for example Core Player or Top Talent).
