Cascading goals: parent goals and sub-goals

Discover how cascading goals can enhance alignment, boost team productivity, and drive organizational success through effective strategy implementation.

Cascading goals let you build a hierarchy of objectives instead of tracking each one in isolation. A high-level goal becomes a Parent goal, and the goals that contribute to it become its Sub-goals.

Sub-goals let you break a goal down and track its progress in detail. A parent goal that is measured based on sub-goals automatically reflects the combined progress of everything beneath it.

Overview

A Parent goal is a high-level goal, and the goals that contribute to it are Sub-goals.

A parent goal that is measured Based on sub-goals automatically reflects the combined progress of its sub-goals.

How progress rolls up

  • A parent goal set to Based on sub-goals takes its progress from the average progress of its sub-goals if they match the period frequency.
  • When sub-goals share the same measurement type and unit, their targets and attainment add up directly. Otherwise, it all gets summed up as a percentage of attainment.
  • The parent's status reflects the state of its sub-goals. For example, if every sub-goal is achieved, the parent is marked Achieved.

How to use

  1. In your sidebar, go to Performance
  2. Access the Goals tab
  3. Open the goal you want to connect
  4. Click Add parent goal
  5. Select the goal that should sit above it and confirm

The goal is now linked to its parent and starts contributing to the parent's progress.

How to add sub-goals

  1. Open the goal that should act as the parent.
  2. Click Add sub-goal.
  3. Create a new subgoal.
  1. Open the goal.
  2. Next to its parent, choose Unlink.
  3. Confirm the action.

When you unlink a goal, it will no longer be part of its parent goal. It becomes a standalone goal and no longer contributes to the parent's progress. You can link it to a parent goal again at any time.

When creating a goal

  1. In your sidebar, go to Performance.
  2. Access the Goals tab.
  3. Click + Add goal.
  4. Follow the creation steps:
    • Name and Description — what the goal is and why it matters.
    • How it's measured — choose a measurement type:
      • Numeric
      • Percentage
      • Currency
      • Achieved / Not achieved — a yes/no outcome.
      • Based on sub-goals — progress is calculated from the goal's sub-goals, must match the parent period.
    • Assign to — who the goal is for.
    • Target frequency and targets — set a single target or break it into periods.
  5. Save the goal.

Public goals are visible to everyone across the organization. Restricted goals can only be seen by the assigned users, their managers, admins, and the goal's creator. Goals are Restricted by default.

FAQ

  1. Can a goal contribute to more than one objective?
Each goal can be linked to a single parent goal. Its progress then contributes to that parent, which can itself roll up into a larger goal — this is how objectives cascade across the company.

  2. What happens to a goal when I unlink it from its parent?
It becomes a standalone goal and stops contributing to the parent's progress. You can link it to a parent goal again at any time.

  3. Can I assign a goal to an entire team?
Yes. Goals can be assigned to a team, role, legal entity, or the whole company, so shared objectives are created once and owned collectively.

  4. Can each period have a different target?
Yes. You can enter target values manually for each period, distribute a total equally, or apply the same target across all periods.

  5. How is overall goal attainment calculated?
Overall attainment is calculated from the progress made across the goal's periods (or sub-goals), while keeping the goal's original target as the overall objective.

  6. Must a key result share the same deadline as the goal?
Yes if we want the parent goal to be tracked by the progress of the subgoals. Progress in that case will calculated from the attainment of subgoals per each period. Otherwise we can have a parent goal with its own metric with different period subgoals attached.
