What is JumpCloud?
JumpCloud is a cloud-based directory and identity management platform that helps companies securely manage user identities and access to IT resources, such as systems, applications and networks.
With the JumpCloud integration, employees you create in Factorial are automatically created as users in JumpCloud. This saves you from adding each user by hand and keeps user details consistent between both tools.
Overview
- The integration handles user provisioning from Factorial to JumpCloud
- When you create an employee in Factorial, a user is automatically created in JumpCloud
- The following data is sent to JumpCloud: first name, last name, work email and a username in the format Firstname.Lastname
- The integration connects to JumpCloud using a JumpCloud API key
- The integration is available in the Factorial Marketplace and is free of charge
Before you start
Make sure you have:
- Access to install integrations from the Marketplace in Factorial
- A JumpCloud API key from an administrator with the Manager, Administrator or Admin with Billing role. We recommend using a dedicated administrator for the integration
- A work email for every employee you want to create in JumpCloud
How to set up the integration
Step 1: Get your JumpCloud API key
- Log in to the JumpCloud Admin Portal
- Create a dedicated administrator for the integration: go to Settings > Administrators and click + Admin. Give it the Manager, Administrator or Admin with Billing role
- Logged in as that administrator, open My API Key and click Generate New API Key
- Copy the key. This is the API key you will enter in Factorial
Your API key gives access to your JumpCloud account. Keep it secret and do not share it.
Step 2: Install the integration in Factorial
- In your Factorial sidebar, go to Marketplace
- Search for JumpCloud and open it
- Click Install
- Follow the prompts and enter your JumpCloud API key
Once connected, a user is created in JumpCloud each time you create an employee in Factorial.
Step 3: Activate new users in JumpCloud
New users created by the integration appear in JumpCloud with the Staged status. To give them access to resources, activate them in JumpCloud and assign the devices, groups or policies they need.
Key roles and responsibilities
| Role | Responsibility |
|---|---|
| Your company | Install the integration from the Marketplace; provide the JumpCloud API key from an administrator with the required role; activate new users in JumpCloud; keep employee names and work emails in Factorial accurate so users are created correctly. |
| Factorial | Builds and maintains the integration and provides support through the Factorial Support team. |
Tips and best practices
Use a dedicated administrator: generate the API key from an administrator created only for the integration, so the connection does not depend on a personal account.
Add a work email before creating the employee: employees without a work email are not created in JumpCloud.
Remember to activate new users: users stay in the Staged status until you activate them in JumpCloud.
