Duplicate a goal

Duplicate goal creates a new goal from an existing one. It opens the New goal wizard filled with the original goal's name, description, assignees, period, frequency, type of metric and targets, so you only change what is different (usually the Goal period) and save. The original goal is not changed.

Before you start

  • Cascading goals (parent goals, sub-goals and the Based on sub-goals type of metric) are available on the Enterprise plan.
  • You need Goals > Create key results. Duplicate goal is only shown to people who can create goals.
  • Your Create key results scope must cover the original goal's assignees, because the copy keeps them. If it doesn't, change Assign to before saving.

Step by step

  1. Go to Performance > Goals.
  2. Open the row menu (...) of the goal and click Duplicate goal. You can also click Duplicate goal in the goal's detail page header, or in the row menu of a goal in the Sub-goals tab or in an employee's goals side panel.
  3. In the wizard, change the fields you need. For example, set Goal period to next quarter and update the Name if you want to tell the two goals apart.
  4. Click Continue, review the Configuration step, and click Submit. Factorial shows "Goal created" and opens the new goal.

Rules and behavior

  • The copy keeps the original's Name, Description, Assign to, Goal period, Target frequency, Type of metric, values and period targets.
  • If you can edit the original's parent goal, then the copy keeps that parent: a duplicated sub-goal is created next to the original under the same parent. If you can't edit the parent, then the copy is created as a standalone goal.
  • If the copy has no parent, then Create an individual goal for each person is available in the wizard, so you can turn a shared goal into one goal per person.
  • The copy doesn't take the original's sub-goals. If you duplicate a goal measured Based on sub-goals, add sub-goals to the copy afterwards.
  • The copy doesn't take the original's progress. It starts as Not started.
  • The copy doesn't take the original's weight or incentive plans.
  • If you change the Target frequency and the period targets were entered by hand, then you must fill in the new periods before you can save.
  • If the copy's assignees are outside your Create key results scope, then saving is refused. Change Assign to and save again.

Limitations

  • You can't duplicate several goals at once.
  • You can't duplicate a whole goal tree (a parent with all its sub-goals) in one step.
  • You can't use Create an individual goal for each person when the copy keeps a parent goal (duplicating a sub-goal).
  • The copy keeps the same name as the original. Rename it if you need to tell them apart in the list.

Troubleshooting

  • Symptom: "I don't see Duplicate goal." → Cause: You don't have Goals > Create key results, or its scope doesn't reach any active employee. → Fix: Ask an admin to review your permissions.
  • Symptom: "Saving the copy fails." → Cause: One of the original's assignees is outside your Create key results scope, or the original is assigned to a team, legal entity, role or the whole company and your scope isn't For the whole company. → Fix: Change Assign to to people inside your scope.
  • Symptom: "The copy won't save after I changed the frequency." → Cause: Hand-entered period targets don't fit the new periods. → Fix: Fill in each period or click Distribute equally.
  • Symptom: "Two goals have the same name in the list." → Cause: The copy keeps the original name. → Fix: Use Edit goal to rename one of them.
