Technical contact for API error notifications

Discover how to effectively manage and resolve API error notifications by identifying and contacting the right technical support.

When webhook deliveries fail, it's important that the right people are notified so they can resolve the issue quickly. You can now configure a dedicated Technical contact for your company, ensuring API-related notifications are sent to the team responsible for maintaining your integrations.

Overview

The Technical contact allows your company to define the email address that should receive API notification emails, such as webhook delivery failures.

Previously, these notifications were sent to an inferred recipient, such as the partner's email, the OAuth application owner, or the person who created the webhook subscription. In many cases, these recipients were no longer responsible for the integration, causing issues to go unnoticed.

By configuring a Technical contact, you can ensure API notifications reach the appropriate team and help reduce downtime caused by unnoticed webhook failures.

If no Technical contact is configured, the notification process continues to work as before.

How to use

  1. In your sidebar, go to Settings
  2. Open Advanced configuration
  3. Select API notifications
  4. In the Technical contact field, enter the email address that should receive API notifications
  5. Click Save

To remove the Technical contact, clear the Technical contact field. Once removed, notifications will follow the default recipient flow.

If you cannot save the Technical contact email address, the email address may not be in a valid format. Verify that you've entered a valid email address and try saving again.

How notifications are sent

When a webhook delivery fails, Factorial notifies recipients in the following order:

  1. Partner email
  2. Company Technical contact (if configured)
  3. OAuth application owner
  4. Webhook subscription author
  5. Company administrators

If no Technical contact has been configured, this step is skipped and the remaining notification flow continues unchanged.

When a webhook delivery reaches its final failure state after all retry attempts have been exhausted, company administrators continue to receive the notification as the final fallback.

Tips and best practices

  • Configure a shared team email address (for example, your Engineering or IT team inbox) instead of an individual's email address
  • Regularly review the configured Technical contact to ensure it remains up to date
  • Use a monitored mailbox so webhook failures can be addressed as quickly as possible

FAQ

  1. Is configuring a Technical contact mandatory?
No. If you don't configure a Technical contact, Factorial continues using the existing notification flow without any changes.

  2. Who should be configured as the Technical contact?
We recommend using a monitored shared mailbox owned by the team responsible for maintaining your API integrations, rather than an individual employee's email address.

  3. Does this change affect existing webhook subscriptions?
Yes. Once a Technical contact is configured, it becomes part of the notification recipient cascade for webhook delivery failures. No changes to existing webhook subscriptions are required.

  4. What happens if I remove the Technical contact?
The Technical contact is removed from the notification flow, and webhook failure notifications follow the same recipient cascade used before this feature was introduced.
