You can now reopen a completed payroll cycle directly from the cycle page, without contacting Support. This allows you to correct mistakes or make updates while keeping your existing payroll data unchanged.
Overview
The Reopen cycle feature allows authorised users to move a completed payroll cycle back to the appropriate status so they can make changes.
When you reopen a cycle, its status changes depending on whether payroll results have been imported and whether the cut-off date has passed. Existing compensations, imported payroll results, supplements, and observations remain unchanged. No recalculation takes place.
When and why to use it
Use this feature when you need to make a correction after completing a payroll cycle, for example:
- A timesheet is approved after the cycle has been completed.
- A compensation amount is incorrect.
- A supplement was forgotten.
- You need to make another update before finalizing the cycle again.
Reopening a cycle lets you manage these changes directly, without requesting a manual status change from Support or Engineering.
How to use
- In your sidebar, go to Compensation
- Open the completed payroll cycle
- Click on Reopen cycle
-
Review the confirmation window. The window explains the status the cycle will return to and why.
- Review: If payroll results have already been imported
- Preparation: If no payroll results have been imported and the cut-off date has passed
- Open: If no payroll results have been imported and the cut-off date has not passed
- Confirm the action
- Make the necessary changes
- The actions available will depend on the cycle's new status. For example, if the cycle returns to Review, you can use Send for payment when applicable.
- Complete the cycle again

Off-cycle runs cannot be reopened using this feature.
Only the previous, current, and future payroll periods can be reopened. If the cycle belongs to an older period, the button is disabled and a tooltip explains why.
If you cannot reopen a completed cycle, check that you have the Reopen payroll run permission. This permission is granted by default to admins with the Manage compensations permission. If you still cannot reopen the cycle, contact your administrator or Factorial Support.
If your payroll results did not update after reopening the cycle, this is expected. Reopening a cycle does not trigger a recalculation. Existing compensations, imported payroll results, supplements, and observations remain unchanged. Make the necessary corrections and follow your usual payroll process.
Tips and best practices
- Check the cycle status before reopening it. The status determines which actions are available after reopening.
- Review imported payroll results before making changes. Reopening a cycle does not recalculate existing results.
- Make and verify all necessary corrections before completing the cycle again.
- Check your permissions. You need the Reopen payroll run permission to use this feature.
- Review the notification on the cycle page. It indicates that the cycle has been reopened and remains visible until the cycle is completed again.
